Сравнительный энзимологический анализ показал, чго первичное окисление осуществляется монооксигеназами, отщепляющими ацетильные группы от ЭДТА с поглощением кислорода и образованием глиоксилата и аммония. Обнаружены различия в зависимости мопооксигеназ разных штаммов от кофакторов (ФАД или ФМН).
