Good — morning boys and girls! I' m glad to see you! Today we’re going to celebrate St. P atrick’s Day. W e’ll see how people in the UK and the USA celebrate it every year on the 17th of March.

St. P atrick’s Day is a traditional Irish holiday. B y the way, what do you know about Ireland? A

nswer my questions: Where is Ireland situated? What is the national symbol of the Northern Ireland? How are people in Ireland called? What language do they speak? What is the flag of Ireland? Who is the head of the country?4. Задача № 1But let’s turn to our holiday. M arch 17 is St. P

atrick’s Day. I t’s a national Irish holiday. B

ut people in the USA also celebrate it in their country. T hey have great parades on this day. G reen is one of the national colors of Ireland and also one of the signs of spring.

G reen stripes are painted on the street. P eople wear green shirts, hair ribbons and hats. M any American bars even serve green beer on that day. But who is St. P atrick? At first let’s listen to the poem about him.St.

P atrick’s DaySt. P atrick’s Day is here, you see. We'll pick some shamrocks, one, two, and three. We'll count the leaves and look them over, And maybe find a four-leafed clover. I'll sew green buttons on my vest; Green for St. P atrick is the best. I'll wear a green hat, very high, And dance a jig—at least I’ll try! a) Let’s read about him and then answer my questions.

t. P atrick St. P atrick, the patron saint of Ireland, was born in Wales about AD 385. W

hen he was 16, he was sold into slavery to Ireland where he was a shepherd for 6 years. W hile in captivity he studied and turned to religion. H e escaped slavery and later returned to Ireland as a missionary, determined to convert Ireland to Christianity. H e used the shamrock to explain the Holy Trinity.

T his fact upset the Celtic Druids. P atrick was arrested several times, but escaped each time. H e traveled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries across the country.

H e also set up schools and churches which would aid him in his conversion of the Irish country to Christianity. His mission in Ireland lasted for thirty years. H e died on March 17 in AD 461. T

hat day has been commemorated as St. P atrick’s Day ever since. Patronsaint — святой покровитель Slavery — рабствоA Shepherd — пастух Captivity — плен Convert — обращать Christianity — христианствоThe Holy Trinity — Святаятроица Escape — сбегатьSet up — строить Aid — помощьCommemorate — память AD — нашейэрыUpset — расстроены throughout — поEstablish — создавая conversion — обращениеb) Now answer my questions:

1. Who is St. P atrick?2. Where was he born?3. What happened with him when he was 16?4. Why did he come back to Ireland?5. Why did he use shamrock?6. What did he do in Ireland? You can see in Ireland a lot of interesting places connected with Patrick, such as churches, monuments and different places. c) There are many traditions connected with this holiday. The symbol of the festival is a shamrock. O n this day people do everything in the form of a shamrock: buns, cakes, cards and play different games.

T here are many poems about shamrock: Let's listen some of them: Five Little ShamrocksOne green shamrock, in the morning dew; Another one sprouted; And then there were two. Two green shamrocks, growing 'neath the tree, Another one sprouted; And then there were three. Three green shamrocks, by the cottage door, Another one sprouted; And then there were four. Four green shamrocks, near a beehive; Another one sprouted; And then there were five. Five little shamrocks, bright and emeraldFive little shamrocks, bright and emerald green, Think of all the luck these shamrocks will bringI’m looking over a four leaf clover. I'm looking over a four leaf cloverThat I overlooked before. One leaf is sunshine, The second is rain, Third is the roseThat grows in the lane. No need explainingThe one remainingIs somebody I adore. I'm looking over a four leaf cloverThat I overlooked before People have a lot of fun. L et’s have a fun too!

L et' divide into two teams. Y our task is what team will be the fastest?

M ake a decoration. Время дается 2−3 минуты, по команде уч-ся заканчивают, гирлянда замеряется, и выявляем победителей. d) Now let' guess a shamrock puzzle. e) Leprechauns. O ne of the symbols of this holiday is a leprechaun. H

e is a fairy — tale shoe maker, who owed a bag of gold. I f you catch a leprechaun he will tell you where he hides his gold. B

ut be careful! T hey are rather witty and they can deceive you. W

ould you like to catch a leprechaun? L et’sdoit! Не дайте ему выбежать из круга и унести свой мешок с золотом! f)Who Stole the Bag from the Leprechaun?" Makearound. Начинается игра в медленном темпе с постепенным ускорением. Водящий/ учитель начинает игру, произнося фразу: «WhoStoletheBagfromtheLeprechaun?» несколько раз подряд в одном и том же ритме хлопков. Затемводящийговорит: Dasha stole the Bag from the Leprechaun ." Этотчеловекотвечает: «Who me?» Not me!

P asha stole the bag from the Leprechaun. Кто остался — он и украл! g) Now your task is — who painted the leprechaun best with bind eyes? Ктолучшеибыстрее? f) Irish people know a lot of songs and poems about these creatures. L et’s make a competition — who knows the best the song about him?(команды поют песню про лепрекона на мотив любой песни, выбираем кто лучше?)Leprechaun.I'm looking for a leprechaun, Leprechaun, leprechaun. I'm looking for a leprechaun; Do you know where he’s gone? He wears a suit that’s made of green, Made of green, made of green, He wears a suit that’s made of green, Do you know where he’s gone? H

e lives by a rainbow and hides his gold, Hides his gold, hides his gold, He lives by a rainbow and hides his gold; Do you know where he’s gone? I f you see a leprechaun, Leprechaun, leprechaun, If you see a leprechaun, Please tell me where he’s gone! h) There are many different legends about St. P atrick. Y ou know that people made legends.

N ow it’s your turn. M ake a legend about St.

O ne day Patrick gathered them on the mountain and ordered them to go away from Ireland. B ut there was one very big and cunning snake, who didn’t want to do it. T

hen he made a big box and told that she couldn’t get in that box. T he snake got, Patrick close the box and threw it away into the sea. 2.

You are very clever guys!

A nd as a tradition let’s have a green drink! ConclusionIn our work we have looked through the history of American holiday. W e searched how these holidays appeared in the country and we stated that they are very similar to those from Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Most of the holidays kept all traditions from what country they appeared. B

ut also we can see that many holidays are originally American and they are the part of the American culture. We have seen that many holidays are very popular not only in America but also here in Russia and many other countries. In practical part we show how this material can be used during the lessons and subject weeks. I t’ll be very interesting for pupils to learn foreign culture through the interesting lessons, song, games and traditions. It will be very interesting for pupils to sing traditional Christmas songs and to recite poems instead of reading about them only in their textbooks. Bibliography1. Ю. Б.
