В 1988 году Choo и соавторам (Choo Q-L et al. 1989) удалось из плазмы экспериментально инфицированного шимпанзе клонировать фрагмент генома вируса гепатита С. Работа по расшифровке полного генома ВГС была успешно завершена в 1989 году, в этом же году появилась первая диагностическая тест-система «Ortho HCV ELISA», которая позволяла определять в крови больных анти-ВГС антитела класса IgG.
