Внутриклеточное размножение Т. cruzi обеспечивает паразиту неуязвимость для циркулирующих в крови факторов защиты хозяина. Применяемые при болезни Шагаса в настоящее время лекарственные препараты — бензнидазол и нифуртимокс, эффективны лишь в острой фазе заболевания и не могут быть использованы при хронической его форме, обладая высокой токсичностью и приводя к ряду побочных эффектов.
