Средняя и максимальная ПЖ человека значительно варьируют и существенно различаются в разных странах. По данным Совета Европы, среди стран Европейского Сообщества наибольшая ПЖ мужчин наблюдается в Исландии, Сан-Марино, Швейцарии и Швеции (в среднем 78 лет), а женщин — в Сан-Марино, Швейцарии, Франции и Италии (от 82.9 до 84.2 лет).
