Предполагается, что важная роль в контроле специфичности действия энхансеров и сайленсеров принадлежит еще одному типу регуляторных ДНК элементов — инсуляторам. Инсуляторы блокируют активность энхансера (сайленсера), но это происходит только в том случае, если инсулятор находится между энхансером (сайленсером) и промотором гена.
