В XIX в. проблемы ранней истории индепендентства начинают интересовать американскую историографию. Монография X. Декстера «Исто8 рия конгрегационализма. Анализ литературы о нем за последние три столетия» 9 представляет объемный и обстоятельный труд. Автор пытается выявить два различных течения в пуританизме — пресвитерианство и индепендентство.
