В настоящее время в качестве основного надмолекулярного образования хромосомы рассматривается элементарная хромосомная фибрилла. Такие представления восходят к классическим работам Риса (Ris, 1957), описавшего эти фибриллы в качестве единственных визуализируемых структурных единиц митотических хромосом.
