В настоящее время в мире существует ограниченное число моделей животных с признаками преждевременного старения. Так наиболее изученной является созданная японскими учеными линия мышей SAM (senescence accelerated mouse), представленная 12 сублиниями, различающимися по характеру проявления признаков старения (Takeda et al., 1998; 2009).
