Моральные аллегории «Королевы фей» начинали казаться многим викторианцам излишне дидактическими, язык поэмы, при всей его красоте, становился все большим препятствием для неподготовленного читателя, да и буржуазная среда, к которой принадлежало большинство читателей викторианской эпохи, не способствовала восприятию куртуазно-гуманистических героических идеалов Спенсера.
