В настоящее время остаются недостаточно изученными механизмы нейропластичности, способствующие восстановлению речи после перенесенного инсульта. Благодаря появлению новейших методов нейровизуализации, таких как функциональная магнитно-резонансная томография (фМРТ), стало возможным неинвазивное изучение функциональной реорганизации мозга после перенесенного инсульта.
