У плацентарных млекопитающих дозовая компенсация обеспечивается посредством инактивации одной из двух Х-хромосом у самок. Этот процесс регулируется работой центра инактивации и его ключевым геном Xist, экспрессия которого приводит к привлечению модификаций хроматина, обеспечивающих инактивацию транскрипции.
