Впервые явление ограничения (рестрикции) размножения бактериофагов в бактериях было описано в начале 50-х годов исследователями Luria и Bertani. Было замечено, что при пересеве бактериофага X с одного штамма E. coli на другой происходит резкое снижение эффективности инфекции.
