Известно, что ВИЧ-1 отличает исключительно высокая генетическая изменчивость (Coffin et al., 1995). В зараженном организме происходит постепенная закономерная эволюция вируса. Это приводит к тому, что вирусы выделяемые на последних стадиях болезни отличаются от тех, которые доминировали в ее начале.
