I nternational civilian staff includes 38 people. F or the time of the peacekeeping mission the death toll of troops, police and civilian personnel is 171, 3 and 5. Contributors of military personnel: Austria, Argentina (the Argentine contingent includes soldiers from Brazil, Chile and Paraguay), Brazil, Canada, Hungary, Paraguay, Peru, Slovakia, United Kingdom, Croatia, Chile. Police officers are given by such countries as Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, India, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Slovakia, Ukraine, Croatia, and Montenegro. The UN Security Council and to this day extends the mandate of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). I n the resolution adopted by majority vote the Council members called on the parties «to intensify negotiations on the settlement of the situation» on the island. I
n an agreed resolution Council members noted «progress towards resolving the status of Cyprus» and urged Cypriot leaders to «reach a general agreement.» In turn, the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warmly welcomed the participants return to the negotiating table. N egotiations were suspended in late May after DervisEroglu has replaced the former Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat after the presidential elections held in the north of Cyprus. O n the part of the Greek Cypriot delegation was headed by their leader DimitrisChristofias.
E arlier Cypriot leaders declared their commitment to the reunification of the island on the basis of ethnic federation and political equality, as defined in the Security Council resolution. So peacekeepers in Cyprus or officially, the United Nations Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) were formed in 1964 to maintain peace and prevent clashes between rival communities of Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. T he mandate for the peacekeeping forces is extended every six months. C
ountries participating in the peacekeeping mission are numerous;they are Australia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, India, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Slovakia, Ukraine, Croatia, Montenegro and many others.
